Willy deVille in Top 2000 a gogo [Dutch]

Deze aflevering van Top 2000 a gogo richt zich op Willy DeVille, de zanger die met zijn band Mink DeVille een enorme hit scoort met Spanish Stroll.

DeVille, die in 2009 overlijdt aan de gevolgen van alvleesklierkanker, legt uit dat hij op jonge leeftijd al verslingerd raakte aan drugs, in het bijzonder heroïne. Spanish Stroll is dan ook gebaseerd op DeVille's ervaringen met dealers en gebruikers. Zoals hij zelf aangeeft: "Ik heb niet zo'n levendige fantasie. Het moet wel autobiografisch zijn."

Zingen met gevoel
Die autobiografische elementen waren volgens DeVille nodig om Spanish Stroll en zijn andere nummers overtuigend te kunnen zingen. "Als je het niet voelt, kan je het over tien jaar niet meer zingen", legt hij uit. Al vond de Amerikaan zichzelf geen groots zanger: "Ik zeg niet dat ik een geweldige zanger of schrijver ben, of een geweldige entertainer, maar mijn band was de beste."

Spanish Stroll is de enige notering van Mink DeVille in de NPO Radio 2 Top 2000. In de editie van 2020 staat het nummer op plek 1654. Dat was wel eens anders: ooit stond Spanish Stroll ruim duizend plekken hoger. Bekijk de ontwikkeling van het nummer hier.

A. Paul James: The Stones wanted Mink DeVille to open for them in Paris. Believe it or not, they turned it down because Mink DeVille was very popular in Paris and preferred to do their own show and not open there. We played the Olympia a famous Opera House in Paris for three sold out shows... In Hanover Germany, Toots (Willy's first wife) & Willy DeVille took me with them to hang with The Rolling Stones after our show there. We met them all and ended up partying in Keith Richard room till 10am the next morning!

This generous 17-track compilation of Willy DeVille's live performances covers his early years with Mink DeVille in 1977 extending to solo work in 2006. All songs were recorded in Europe, perhaps an indication of how well he was accepted there as opposed to his home country. That's especially interesting given how much his music drew almost entirely from American influences such as '60s Brill Building pop, New Orleans/Cajun, R&B, and an inner city Latin style best exemplified in a sizzling version of "Demasiado Corazon."

Many of his heavy hitters are present in fired-up versions, sometimes even better than the studio originals. Get hip on his great renditions of "Venus Of Avenue D", "Love And Emotion", "Demasiado Corazon", "Spanish Stroll" and a splendid version of the all time classic "Hey Joe".

Verzameld - Willy DeVille [blog]

In februari verscheen Collected, het eerste volledige en definitieve overzicht van de carrière van Willy DeVille. Twee cd’s en nog wat, zes jaar na zijn dood, volstaan om de muzikant samen te vatten. En een boekje, waarin vrienden en bandleden hun herinneringen aan de man delen. That’s it, zo’n leven.

Het interview in Humo in 1980, bij het verschijnen van Le Chat Bleu, heeft destijds een grote indruk op me gemaakt. Het gesprek ging vooral over de grote liefde voor zijn vrouw, Toots DeVille. Ze stond mee op de foto’s, samen met haar poedels. En het is op haar bovenarm dat de blauwe kat getatoeëerd staat, met onderschrift Willy. Zij was klein en mollig, Willy was rijzig en dun. Een dandy, een Elvis met een zijden pak, oorbellen en een pompadoer kapsel. Styling bleef altijd belangrijk, een fotograaf nooit ver weg. En hij koesterde de geheimzinnige grijns op zijn smalle gezicht.

Ik kocht de LP.  Er staan accordeons op, en violen, en de prachtige stem van Willy DeVille, die de mooiste snik in zijn songs legt. Hemelse muziek, uit het hart, geworteld in de soul uit New Orleans.

Zonder die stem, en zijn talent om liedjes te schrijven, zou Willy DeVille altijd William Borsey gebleven zijn, geboren in de grauwe arbeidersstad Stamford, Connecticut, ten noorden van New York. Een echte ster is Willy DeVille nooit geworden. Eén grote hit in het begin van zijn carriére, Spanish Stroll. Later loopt hij nog Mark Knopfler tegen het lijf, en scoort een hit met Storybook Love. Zijn kleine, maar trouwe fanbase in Europa houdt hem van de straat.

Het geeft hem de de ruimte om te struikelen, en weer recht te komen. Mainstream succes, met het dictaat van de massa, van wat anderen denken en van je verwachten, is hem bespaard gebleven. Net als de angst om straks niet meer tot de top te behoren, het gevecht met de ellebogen. En de vleierij rond je, zolang je de god bent die manna uitdeelt.

Niet dat hij het niet geprobeerd heeft.

He was very wrapped up in being Willy, zegt iemand op de eerste pagina van het boekje. Hij heeft jaren gespendeerd aan de opbouw van de mythe, met een onwrikbaar geloof in het eigen talent. Dat vraagt een flinke dosis narcisme, zonder twijfel, zoals elke ambitie. En een talent voor verbazing, hoe het toch mogelijk is dat de rest van de wereld je niet naar waarde weet te schatten.

Maar uiteindelijk leer je dat de echte top, of wat daar voor moet doorgaan, geen plek is waar je de vergissingen kan maken die je wil en moet maken. Waar je kan blijven zoeken. Waar je je talent door de tijd en je kwetsbaarheid kan laten looien.

Na Toots volgen nog twee andere vrouwen, waarvan de eerste zelfmoord pleegt wanneer Willy een affaire begint met de derde. Hij ontdekt het lichaam van die tweede vrouw, hangend aan een koord in hun huis, en rijdt de bergen in. Daar crasht hij frontaal tegen een grote pick-up. Drie jaar loopt hij met krukken, ongeveer elk bot in zijn benen was gebroken.

Authentiek. Zo noemen we vandaag een persoonlijkheid als Willy DeVille. En we bewonderen hem daarvoor. In 1980 bestond dat woord nog niet. Zijn Amerikaanse platenfirma wou Le Chat Bleu zelfs niet uitbrengen. Niet commercieel genoeg. Onverkoopbaar, die accordeon, die vreemde mengeling van stijlen. Tot de plaat in Europa wel bleek aan te slaan, en massaal naar Amerika werd geëxporteerd.

Vandaag is dat anders. We zoeken, wanhopig bijna, naar onszelf, en naar iets oorspronkelijks in een vlakke, geglobaliseerde wereld. Naar diversiteit in onze beleving. Naar openheid voor het andere. Daar vermoeden we de echte waarde. We zoeken het in ons werk, in onze kantoren, we zoeken het in onze winkelcentra, en we vragen ons af hoelang het nog zal duren tot iedereen begrijpt dat de wereld altijd groter zal zijn dan onze angst voor het onbekende.

Stamford, Connecticut is nu een stad van hoog opgeleiden. De industrie heeft er plaats gemaakt voor kenniswerk. Een jonge Willy Borsey zou er vandaag vanuit zijn puberslaapkamer een eigen, unieke mix van muziekstijlen uitzenden naar de wijde wereld. Wars van platenbazen, marketeers en betweters allerhande. De muziekwereld is geen gesloten systeem meer.

Ik zet nog een keer Just to walk that little girl home op. Een smartlap. Over hoe veraf een droom kan zijn, ook al zit je er vlakbij. Daar zit schoonheid, hoor ik, in de hmm na there is nothing I wouldn’t do.  En ik blijf nog even zitten, in de stilte.

Derksen draait DeVille [14-03-15]

Johan Derksen draait iedere zaterdagmorgen van 09:00 - tot 12:00 uur bij Radio Rijnmond muziek uit eigen kast in het radioprogramma Muziek voor Volwassenenen. Blues, beat, roots, country en Americana. "Want ik probeer de luisteraars kennis te laten maken met muziek die ze doorgaans nooit op de radio horen of muziek die nostalgische gevoelens oproept". 

Het zal dan ook niemand verwonderen dat hij een groot liefhebber is van Willy DeVille. Het verzamelalbum 'Willy DeVille & Mink DeVille: Collected 1976-2009' [Universal] was daarom op zaterdag 14 maart jl. 'album van de week', waarvan de onderstaande 3 nummers werden gedraaid en toegelicht. "Deze plaat is een aanrader voor iedere muziekliefhebber, want in niet een collectie mag muziek van Willy DeVille ontbreken", aldus Johan Derksen. 30 years: Where Angels Fear to Tread (Mink DeVille album).

Where Angels Fear to Tread, issued in 1983, is the fifth album by Mink DeVille. The album’s title comes from the Johnny Mercer song “Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Tread)”, not from the novel by that title written by E. M. Forster. It was the second album Mink DeVille recorded for Atlantic Records, and Atlantic brought in two in-house producers, Howard Albert and Ron Albert, to produce the album. For this album, Willy DeVille reached deeper into his Latin roots, even recording a salsa number, "Demasiado Corazon". A single, “Each Word’s a Beat of My Heart”, reached number 89 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Two percussionists from the Latin dance/disco band Foxy, Richie Puente and Joe Galdo, played on the album. A recording of "Stand by Me" was made at this session and released on a 7-inch single along with “Demasiado Corazon” and “Are You Lonely Tonight?” The album was recorded at the Criteria Recording Studios, Miami.

Reviews
Trouser Press said about the album, “This uncluttered and uncomplicated tribute to DeVille's chosen forebears — Sam Cooke, Phil Spector, the Drifters, Joe Tex, James Brown — also includes forays into Spanish Harlem and other wondrously nostalgic time warps. DeVille's songwriting and singing have returned to top strength, and the record burns with sincerity and warmth. Simply, elegantly excellent.”

Allmusic said about Where Angels Fear to Tread, “DeVille and his band were burning through the pages of rock and R&B history (there are a couple of doo wop- and New Orleans-flavored cuts as well) with raw swagger and astonishing musicianship. Why they didn't catch and George Thorogood did is a mystery that will be up to '80s historians to figure out.” Track Listing, overview and credits at AllMusic.

Boris Kinberg, a percussionist in The Mink DeVille Band, considered "Lilly's Daddy's Cadillac" one of the best songs Willy DeVille ever wrote. "It's a brilliant song. It’s a mini-film. In a three-minute song you have an hour and a half movie. It’s about drug deal gone bad."

Background singers Margaret Reynolds and Beverly Champion had sung with KC and the Sunshine Band and in 1985 would, under the name Margaret Reynolds and Girlfriends, record the Dubwise 12-inch single "Three Steps from True Love."

Willy DeVille recorded "The Moonlight Let Me Down" a second time in 1996 for a CD single. The single included a radio version and extended version of the song as well as "Ballad of the Hoodlum Priest" (from DeVille's Loup Garou)[source].

Paolo Caruso played percussion w/ Mink DeVille at "Live at Montreux 1982"

A German DeVille fan wanted to know who the percussion player was on Mink DeVille's 'Stand By Me' and 'Slow Drain' (From "Live at Montreux 1982"). Mink DeVille guitarist at that time, Paul James himself, gave us the answer: "it was Paolo Caruso. He also introduced Willy, off stage, on mike thru the PA, at the beginning and at the end of the show for the encore. He was the drum tech and played conga drums on a couple songs. he played on 'Slow Drain' also". - Cheers! Paul.

Paolo Caruso, not to be confused with with Paul Caruso (1956-2006) who played with Jimi Hendrix, began self-taught with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion rhythms and instruments. He later took specialized courses from the New York Drummers Collective, studying with Frankie Malabe (Peter Erkine group) and Cyro Baptista (David Byrne, Paul Simon). He has participated in various tours in Italy and abroad with the band of singer-songwriter Luca Carboni. He participated in "Festival del Ritmo e delle Percussioni", playing with drummers Daniele Tedeschi (Vasco Rossi) and Walter Calloni (Lucio Battisti, PFM). Boz Scaggs plays 2 Mink DeVille songs on his album Memphis (2013)

It's great that the legendary Boz Scaggs may make new audiences aware of Mink DeVille with his versions of 'Cadillac Walk' and 'Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl' on his latest album Memphis (2013).

Boz Scaggs: "It's a pretty mixed bag. There are a couple of Willy DeVille songs -- you know, Mink DeVille. One's called 'Cadillac Walk,' the other one's called 'Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl.' Steve Conte's Final Summer Show in NL!

Steve Conte (who was guitarist of the Willy DeVille Band in 2003/2004) played Friday August 9th a final summer show in Café La Strada - Eric's Bar in Goes The Netherlands. He lived a few years in Goes with his wife Hedda and family, but he's going to move back to NYC soon. Steve says: "It's certainly not the end of my romance with The Netherlands... I'll be back a few times a year to see my in-laws and to tour with The Crazy Truth, Michael Monroe or supporting my new solo album 'Steve Conte NYC!' A big thanks to all the friends, family & musicians who came out and packed La Strada for my final NL gig! My time here has been well- spent..." Willy DeVille and Johnny Thunders at Born to Lose:
The Last Rock and Roll Movie (1999)

Johnny Thunders (July 15, 1952 – April 23, 1991), born John Anthony Genzale, Jr., was an American rock and roll/punk rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. He came to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of the New York Dolls. He later played with The Heartbreakers and as a solo artist. Willy DeVille wrote a song called "Chemical Warfare" which appeared on his 1992 album Backstreets of Desire. "Chemical Warfare" was dedicated to Johnny Thunders with whom DeVille shared a long-time friendship. DeVille was first to arrive at the hotel the day of Johnny's death. "Everybody knows a Johnny who just passed away. Big wheels count their dollars while the families count their prayers" (Chemical warfare, chemical warfare, ...)

Februari 3th, 2011, John Mellencamp paid tribute to the late, great singer onstage in Lowell, Mass., with a swaggering, swinging cover of Mink DeVille classic 'She's So Tough.' Check out the video clip, below - it's absolutely inspiring. After that you can see a great clip of Willy himself doing it with his band - and a killer band they were: Louie X. Erlanger, guitar; Ruben Siquenza, bass; Tommy Price, drums; George Cureau, keyboards; David Leathers, sax - all the way back in 1978, from the German Rock Palast broadcast.
