Willy DeVille in het boek 'Bruce Springsteen in OOR' (NL)

In het nieuwe boek 'Bruce Springsteen in OOR' (okt. 2025) staat ook een interessant stukje met paginagrote foto over Willy 'Mink' DeVille. Zie het fragment en foto's van die tekst.

- Dan is het de beurt aan Willy DeVille van de groep Mink DeVille om in navolging van Graham Parker en Bob Seger de rol van Siamese tweelingbroer van Bruce op zich te nemen. Zodra er in OOR over Willy DeVille wordt geschreven, wordt Bruce erbij gehaald. (…) Wanneer je met Willy speelt, moet je er goed uitzien: iemand als Bruce Springsteen zou nog niet eens Willy's koffer mogen dragen.' Bezien vanuit nu lijkt het tamelijk absurd om Willy en Bruce in dezelfde frame te plaatsen. Beide zangers hebben hoogstens (gedeeltelijk) hun wortels in het New Yorkse erfgoed. Willy, echte naam William Paul Borsey Jr., overleden in 2009, was een notoire heroïnejunk - Bruce is fanatiek anti-drugs - en Willy is altijd een margefiguur gebleven. Zijn muziek laat zich het best beschrijven als 'Spanish Americana', met scheuten soul, cajun en New Orleans rhythm & blues in het bakmengsel. Ander type, ander idioom. Hij had in 1977 een grote hit, onder de naam van zijn band Mink DeVille, het übercoole, streetwise Spanish Stroll, dat indertijd wat misleidend aan de man werd gebracht onder de noemer punk/new wave.

We vinden beide heren terug in de OOR lezerspoll van 1981. Bruce Springsteen komt daar uit de bus als nummer 1 in de categorie Beste Zanger (5,8% van de stemmen); Willy deVille staat er op 5 (3.4%). Springsteen wordt niet genoemd in de categorie Beste Live Act. Daar is een nieuw bandje lijstaanvoerder: U2 (7,7%). (…)

(…) When you play with Willy, you have to look good: someone like Bruce Springsteen shouldn't even be allowed to carry Willy's suitcase.' Seen from today, it seems rather absurd to place Willy and Bruce in the same frame. Both singers have at most (partial) roots in New York heritage. Willy, real name William Paul Borsey Jr., who died in 2009, was a notorious heroin addict —Bruce is a staunch anti-drug activist — and Willy has always remained a fringe figure. His music is best described as 'Spanish Americana,' with dashes of soul, Cajun, and New Orleans rhythm & blues thrown into the mix. A different type, a different idiom. He had a big hit in 1977, under the name of his band Mink DeVille, the über-cool, streetwise Spanish Stroll, which at the time was somewhat misleadingly marketed as punk/new wave.

Both gentlemen appear in the 1981 OOR readers' poll. Bruce Springsteen comes out on top in the Best Singer category (5.8% of the votes); Willy deVille is in 5th place (3.4%). Springsteen is not mentioned in the Best Live Act category. A new band tops the charts there: U2 (7.7%). (…)

Legendary Mink DeVille drummer Thommy Price passed away

Former Mink DeVille drummer Thommy Price (December 9, 1956 Brooklyn New York) passed away at October 10th 2025. He played from 1979 to 1982 with Mink DeVille. Price was an American musician and played also drums in a number of bands, including Scandal, Billy Idol, Blue Öyster Cult, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and was an in-demand session drummer. He has his own band, named "Sex Drums & Rock 'n' Roll".  Thommy was drummer on the fourth Mink DeVille album Coup de Grâce (1981) and on the Live at the Savoy 1981 VHS and Live at Montreux 1982 DVD (2008). Willy DeVille's album producer John Philip Shenale was 10 augustus jl. in Nederland. Hij werd geïnterviewd door de Amerikaanse rock muziek journalist Lisa Torem. In de Erik Neimeijer Gallery in Nijverdal werd de middag geopend door voormalig Willy ‘Mink’ DeVille International Fanclub voorzitter Gurrie van Brug. Er waren ongeveer 40 die-hard DeVille fans aanwezig die zich hiervoor van tevoren hadden aangemeld. Phil Shenale produceerde vier Willy DeVille albums (Backstreets of Desire, Loup Garou, Crow Jane Alley, Pistola) en hij vertelde over de samenwerking met Willy in die periode 1992 t/m 2008. Aan de hand van persoonlijke foto’s en beeld- en geluidsfragmenten werd een boeiend beeld weergegeven van de passie die zowel Willy als Phil voor hun werk hadden. Zanger- gitarist (tevens beeldend kunstenaar en galeriehouder) Erik Neimeijer speelde voor- en achteraf een aantal live songs van Willy DeVille op zijn akoestische gitaar en achter de piano. Na afloop werd er onder het genot van een drankje enthousiast nagepraat en konden de bezoekers nog eens extra genieten van de sfeervolle kleurige schilderijen van Erik, en van een selectie ingelijste DeVille live foto’s die ook tentoon werden gesteld. Het werd een bijzonder eerbetoon aan Willy DeVille die 6 augustus 2009 veel te jong overleed. Maar die ook in zijn ruim dertigjarige carrière heel veel muziekliefhebbers talloze mooie momenten heeft bezorgt. 

A special tribute to Willy DeVille in the Erik Neimeijer Gallery [ENG]

Willy DeVille's album producer John Philip Shenale was in the Netherlands on August 10th. He was interviewed by American rock music journalist Lisa Torem. The afternoon was opened at the Erik Neimeijer Gallery in Nijverdal by former Willy "Mink" DeVille International Fan Club chairman Gurrie van Brug. Approximately 40 die-hard DeVille fans were present, having registered in advance. Phil Shenale produced four Willy DeVille albums (Backstreets of Desire, Loup Garou, Crow Jane Alley, Pistola), and he spoke about his collaboration with Willy from 1992 to 2008. Using personal photos and audio clips, he provided a captivating glimpse into the passion both Willy and Phil had for their work. Singer-guitarist (also a visual artist and gallery owner) Erik Neimeijer played several live Willy DeVille songs before and after the performance on his acoustic guitar and piano. Afterward, there was enthusiastic conversation, and the audience could once again enjoy Erik's atmospheric, colorful paintings and a selection of framed DeVille live photos, which were also on display. It was a special tribute to Willy DeVille, who died far too young on August 6, 2009. But who also gave countless wonderful moments to many music lovers throughout his thirty-plus-year career.

ABOUT

Erik Neimeijer (born 1982) is a Dutch musician, painter, and DeVille enthusiast. He played guitar in Cool Genius, Soundsurfer, The Backcorner Boogie Band, and Bökkers, and has performed in various solo and theater shows. Besides his music, Neimeijer is also active as a painter, inspired by the cobra. In 2022, he and his wife Maartje opened their own gallery in Nijverdal, the Netherlands.

Author/journalist/musician Lisa Torem analyzed the studio work of triple-threat artists: Tori Amos, Billy Joel and Suzanne Vega for the Sonicbond On Track Series and co-authored Through The Eye of The Tiger and All That Glitters: The Ava Cherry Story. 

John Philip Shenale (often mentioned as Phil Shenale) is a Canadian composer, arranger, musician and producer based in Los Angeles. Shenale's work has been featured on albums by artists such as Tori Amos, Willy DeVille, Jane's Addiction, Tracy Chapman, Billy Idol, Janet Jackson, Diana Ross, The Bangles, Dionne Warwick, Rick Springfield, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and John Hiatt.

Het kan zijn dat er een zeer gelimiteerde uitgave van Willy DeVille’s docu Heaven Stood Still op dvd uitkomt in Duitsland. De film is in het Engels met Duitse ondertiteling.
