Exclusive interview with Joe Vasta jr. - Part II

Nov. 2010 by Gillespy [GvdH] exclusive for Willy DeVille International Fans.

Hey Joe, welcome back!

Joe Vasta jr: Hey there again ... you did a great job on part one of the interview my friend!! Now where were we??

Uhh ... thank you Joe (blush). After your time with John Waite, we haven't seen you for a long time, what have you done all this time?

Joe Vasta jr: Oh yes!! Well like I said before: I make teeth you know, I always did it on the side. I just like making things you know with good outcomes, just like making music. But playing all the time on the road got to me man. I couldn't hardly keep a girlfriend, because she was always thinking that I was with someone else when I was on the road. But it was a lot of things, you name it ...

Okay let's talk about music. If I send you an e-mail I always open with "Hey Joe", because of Willy his version of this great traditional song. In fact his biggest hit in Europe (1992). what was your opinion about it, Willy scored a hit again after he went solo?

Joe Vasta jr: Well the song is dated you know but he did put a different swing to it, that's for sure right?! We where going to play it for the BB Kings Memorial show, but unfortunately never got it in the show. I just miss Willy's singing man. I like a lot of the other solo songs too, Willy could only sing it his way!

[Joe at Pinkpop '82 / Willy and Joe at Werchter '82 / Mink DeVille, Joe just behind Willy's hand]

Music of New York City is a diverse and important field in the world of music. It has long been a thriving home for jazz, rock and the blues and it is the birthplace of many different styles of music. Do you like today NYC bands, for an example the Fun Lovin' Criminals?

Joe Vasta jr: Yes!!! I like a lot of the new stuff, always involved in it all. I really like the high energy stuff you know, the faster the better! That reminds me: have you ever heard Thommy and me on David Byron's album from 1980? It's called 'This Day and Age' on Arista records. See if you can get it somewhere, this music is great to me! It easily ranks with the best work of contemporaries like Graham Parker and the Jam. Mat Lambert and Robert Sarzo played guitar on it and Billy Joel (!) did background vocals. I admit, could have sounded better that's for sure. But it's an obscure, but absolutely essential example of late-'70s/early-'80s power pop [D.L. Byron - This Day and Age] And I did a record for the Sharks in Canada, on Capitol Records.

How come that there are currently so few bands who can do the same Mink DeVille did at that time: playing a blend of rock, soul, doo-wop, R'n'B, blues?

Joe Vasta jr: You know that's a great question! Willy's music made you play the best you could if you got it in you. The blend was out of this world at times, something that would never happen again! And the proof can be heard on the albums and seen on the Montreux 1982 DVD. "I always made dance music, it's just blues with a rhythm" Willy once said about that. It seems to me that today no one wants to put the hard work into it. First of all you have to know what it's all about, I mean: MUSIC! Everyone learns it a different way I guess. Right away if the person you are playing with is on the same page, you know? You see I came up around with all big bands stuff, and the time in life you learned it too, the mid sixtees, had lots of music to do and play along with. I'll tell you a secret of mine. When I was eight years old, I played records with my fathers phonograph when no one was home, volume knob to ten!! I loved this shit so much I use to make believe I was playing to hundreds of people jumping up and down, like the Who or Jimi Hendrix. I said to myself: I am going to do it someday! That's when I met Thommy Price because he felt the same way man! We started a band and like they say, the rest is history! Did I answer the question??

- You sure did Joe, thanks!

[Mania: 1974 with Joe Mauri, Jimmy Cooke, Joe Vasta, Jimmy O'Donnell, Moe, Thommy Price in Michelle's back yard]

My personal opinion of Willy (Mink) DeVille's lyrics and music is that he always crossed my path in life with the right songs at the right time and so became an important part of my life. And I hear the same story of most fans I know. How did he do that, do you think?

Joe Vasta jr: You are right! He sang anything and everything, and it came out right! How the hell did he do that? He just was that great! And a great man too. He always would say: "I write for me, not for the companies out there Joey. I am not part of the machine". And he was right man! The 'big guys' who are running the companies would never get to know the real Willy. Because they never hanged out with him, you know. Or ... really tried to help him when he needed it. It was all about the money they could make with him. But they didn't know how to promote him, where to put us, on what chart? Thàt's how great he was! What do you do with an artist who is right from the heart but has so many roads to go down?? Sometimes I still don't know myself ...

After the Willy DeVille Birthday Celebration August 23th at BB King's Blues club you told us: "It really was a great night to play. Only hope that Willy heard us. I miss this man." (we all do!). Have you seen him throughout the years after your Mink-time and did you also appreciated his later (New Orleans) stuff?

Joe Vasta jr: No, Willy had lost contact with Thommy and me for some time. And you know why it's so sad for Thommy and me? We did talked to Willy some time before he died. He said he wanted to try and get the old band back together again some day. We were so happy we could get the old band back! And look what happened ... we just did not have the time back then but Willy would have loved it. I know, his later stuff didn't have the same drive to it, very laid back indeed. Very different from the days I played with him. But he could still swing like he did with the Mink DeVille band.

You only had a few rehearsals for the DeVille Birthday Celebration in NYC and it sounded freakin' great so they say. Did you know each other well enough and was there also a massive celebration of reminiscing the good old days afterwards?

Joe Vasta jr: Well, the band didn't sound great in my ears! But then again what were we looking for, just to get around a set or a show for Willy and his fans, not for us. If a Mink DeVille band were to get back together with sufficient rehearsals, it would have to be much much better than the BB King Memorial show. That's for sure. And no, there was no big party after the show, it was all pretty subdued but great to see each other. Willy's wife Nina didn't came back stage, maybe she still felt bitter or a strange feelin' that her man was not there. But hey ... the whole ‘celebration’ was for Willy right?!

The whole show was recorded and filmed too. Will it soon be put out?

Joe Vasta jr: Afterwards we had quite some problems with the recordings of the show. Or rather, nothing but problems with the DVD recordings! The guys that recorded it, did it in two different formats ... how the hell do you do that?!! We had to overdub the bass and many other things too, they forgot to put the bass in the mix when they recorded it! What assholes right?!! David Keyes and I had hours of work ahead of us to make it right. So who knows when this thing will come out ... I don't even know right now, still working on it.

There are rumours that you might be doing this ‘celebration’ again with a smaller band, key guys from Mink DeVille with Peter Wolf singing for the frontman! Can you confirm that?

Joe Vasta jr: Right now, NO! Peter Wolf will not be the frontman again. It was and might have been a good choice to front the band ... but as of now, no.

February this year there was a one-night Willy-Mink DeVille Memorial in the Netherlands with three Dutch/Belgium tribute bands and Freddy Koella and Boris Kinberg played along. And in November this year they will do it again in Germany with a four-gig mini tour. So you can say the DeVille revival has already started! Do you think this is temporary or will it last longer?

Joe Vasta jr: These guys are good that's for sure. But you know, I don't see how Boris and Freddy would do anything over there with more band members from here? I guess it comes down to money right. Okay let's talk about the facts here. First of all these extra musicians were never a part of the Mink DeVille band. Our band had five guys from New York: drums, bass, horn, piano, guitar and a singer, that's it! Never had extra keys and we just had one drummer. We had to work pretty hard man to make this band sound full and moving. We had no backup singers in the band and no extra's man. There simply was no money to pay for it. The Mink DeVille band was the last real recording BAND Willy ever had, if you know what I mean? Later on, every one else were extra's, no band but just musicians to tour with, you know? It seems now everyone wants to be 'the band'... wrong! That's why Willy had guys to play the records and guys to play the tours, I did both! Fortunately there are guys like David Keyes who want to put together a real Mink DeVille band and maybe play around town or tour it. But you can't have all theses x-band members to play it understand? I tell you again, hey these guys are good but how in the world and who is going to pay for it if we would have to tour with a whole orchestra?! It all has to do with budgets, right?

- I understand, it is difficult enough with an original touring band, so definitely with a memorial band.

Thommy Price is a friend of you and I heard you've been together in a recording studio in New York City lately. Can you tell us more about that?

Joe Vasta jr: Sure! Thommy Price and I are going to be putting out a record in the springtime 2011. Some of it is like Mink in a way. But you make up your own mind when you hear it okay? It's very cool shit man, hope everyone loves it when it gets here. Check back with me in two or three months.

[Nowadays: Johnny Rao, Tony Lazzara, Thommy Price, Kristen Greco-D'amodio, Joseph Vasta]

How do you actually deal with the modern (technical) world? I mean, do you have a computer, blackberry, iPad ...?

Joe Vasta jr: You know when it comes to the newer stuff, I leave it to the other guys to run it all. I am a old school recorder ... the tape-way I go, ha ha. Yes I have an internet computer and ohw ... I'm on Facebook as well! [Joseph Vasta on Facebook]

Nowadays there are many many digitalized recordings of independent origin (bootlegs) in circulation among the fans on the internet. What's your opinion about that?

Joe Vasta jr: You know when you do a record with a big company, you should (could) worry about it. But when you put it out yourself, what could you do? The information that's out there (on the internet) is crazy man! I still ask myself: where the hell did they get that from? And how?!

Finally, do you want anything else to say to our readers?

Joe Vasta jr: Ohh ... is it over now? You mean you asked your last question?? Ha ha, only kidding my friend! Well I only hope that a good band with backing would come out of it all. But sometimes I feel it should be left alone, some things should lie where they are you know. It was done and we all got something out of it. Why try to make it something else when it's not. Willy will never come back ... and there's something we should learn from it all, and that is: Willy made us look at our selfs! And from time to time with songs that touched our souls sometimes. How we all could relate, like you said: you get moved from things in life ... Willy was a mover, I guess. Yes, that's right! A mover for Minkers!!

Well Joe we are looking forward to your coming activities and appreciate it a lot that you wanted to answer these questions. And we wish you every success in what you're going to do in the future!

Joe Vasta jr: Thank you for letting me share it with you guys. Let's hope for the best for everyone in the upcoming year okay? And I will share what's new for Thommy and I in the new year. Love to you guys and thanks again for your time. Peace out brothers and sisters!

Exclusive interview with Joe Vasta jr. - Part I

Oct. 2010 by Gillespy [GvdH] exclusive for Willy DeVille International Fans.

Joe Vasta jr is known from Mink DeVille, played Bass on the albums Coup De Grâce 1981 and Where Angels Fear To Tread 1983 and he can be seen on the Montreux 1982 DVD and a lot of YouTube movies on the net, like Pinkpop The Netherlands and Werchter Belgium 1982. Raised and living in New York he speaks to us about his time in Mink DeVille, his family and buddy Thommy Price, his equipment, the dental business, working with others, life in NYC and much more.

- Mink Deville 1984 with a very smooth and sharp-dressed Joe Vasta jr in the middle -

Hey Joe, how are you doing?

Joe: Hi there my friend, I'm fine. I see you have a lot of questions, cool! I have to fix some bass parts on the Mink DeVille party show from BB Kings in a moment. But let's start and if I have to go, I will get back to you on this later, okay?

No problem man, anyway we from WDIF are honored and privileged to interview you! How can you be called: Joe Vasta, Joey Vasta or Joseph Vasta jr?

Joe: I would like to be called Joe Vasta jr.

Then we do so during this "conversation" ;-) You are the son of the legendary musician Joseph Vasta sr. Where do we know your father from?

Joe Vasta jr: Well my father was a trained trumpet player from a very young age. He played with Dizzy Gillespie back in the fifties! He also had his own Big Band with seven members to play with in those days. He also had his own music store for five years and he was always into cars! We loved cars! I loved sports cars too growing up as a kid. There is so much to say about my dad. I guess guys that make music are good at anything, right? He fought in Germany in World War II for four years. Played there too and made a record in Brussels! Can you believe that? And I still have that vinyl thing, very old!!

Are your parents still alive and do you see them regularly?

Joe Vasta jr: My father died in 1982. The second Mink DeVille record has his name on the back at the bottom, to honor my dad. He was the hardest working guy I know, I will always miss him... thanks for asking. It's just my mom and me now. I take care of my mother, she knows everything I do when it comes to music. She knows Thommas Price (drummer) for years, that's because we grew up together. Playing and wishing all these years as kids to make it some day. You tell me if we did?

Well, at least you both played in Mink DeVille, In that sense you have certainly achieved success! Are there more musicians in the Vasta family?

Joe Vasta jr: Not anymore, I had a brother and a sister too. My brother played guitar before the drugs got to him, he died in 1984. He was a Hendrix nut and played like him too! My sister died just two years ago of cancer. Cancer sucks!!

Do you write songs yourself and do you play any other instruments?

Joe Vasta jr: Yes I do write songs and play some instruments too. I arange a lot and puts it all together you might say.

Do you have a favorite bass-guitar and how many guitars do you own right now, would you tell us something about your gear?

Joe Vasta jr: I started off with a Japanese bass when I was a kid. Then I got a Hofner Bass, then a Gibson EB3 electric bass guitar ... then a Rickenbacker Guitar or Ric Bass, a nice bass! But I always had my "P-bass" (Fender Precision Bass) around for years and that's what I play now. But the old ones in stock are all vintage basses. I have a '66 P-bass that's my main bass guitar, you can see it on the BB Kings show. I have a ton of basses that I just sold off ... had way to many, 67 guitars at one time is way to many to care for!

- Joe on the Coup de Grâce album cover 1981/ at the B-day Mem. Night 2010/
Fender Precision Bas "P-bass" -

Before you joined Mink DeVille, Thommy Price and you played among others but with a lot of other musicians on Ronnie Spectors' album Siren (1980). Were you both session musicians at that time?

Joe Vasta jr: Yes, Thommy and me were the hit of New York City. We played on everything we could get our hands on! And we are playing together again. With our own songs, it's coming out next year but I can't say too much about it right now because Thommy is on tour with Joan Jett's Blackhearts at the moment. But I will let you know when, okay?

Okay, let's talk about Mink DeVille.

You've recorded the albums Coup de Grâce 1981 and Where Angels Fear to Tread 1983 with Mink DeVille, and we can see you on the Montreux 1982 dvd. When and how long was you a band member and on tour with Mink DeVille?

Joe Vasta jr: I played with Willy for five years, then on and off again. Because there often was no money for the band. I had to make a living too you know. Where the money we earned with Mink DeVille did go? I don't know! Willy always got some money but what he did with it, who knows? A lot of it went up his arm at that time I suppose. But he took control when Nina came into his life! She is a great person man, she looked out for Willy up until he died, that's for sure. A great woman I must say!

Which Mink DeVille song you play the bass on appeals to you the most and why?

Joe Vasta jr: You know ... almost everything I played with Willy I loved. You need to reach down and find what it takes to make every song happen. That takes practise and the love for music to make a great band. We had all of that back then, nowadays you can hear and see (cd's/ dvd's) how good the band was! Compare it to the later bands and you decide?! In fact all the other Mink guys where good!! But never had the time to become realy GREAT! We just did I feel, that's all.

Yes I agree, the late seventies and early eighties were my favorite Mink times as a fan too! I have often seen your gigs in the Netherlands and Belgium in the early days. Great and exciting times.

- Joe & Willy 1982/ Alan Vega (Suicide), Toots & Willy, late seventies -

After the Mink DeVille era you went on tour with Billy Idol and with ex-Babys’ member John Waite from 1983, did you also record with them?

Joe Vasta jr: Oh yes!! I toured with Billy and his band and I was going to be on the 'Rebel Yell' album. But went with Willy to make the Angels (Where Angels Fear To Tread) album in 1983. And I did record with John Waite too and toured with him. Whow, worked also with so many others, too much to say right now ... [Billy Idol video]

At that time John Waite scored a #1 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 with "Missing You" in 1984. Was that a fun-time for you?

Joe Vasta jr: Well ... John was a great gig to do! Franky the drummer got me in this band realy. We played together for a year or so, made a record and played a lot. We had great people with us on this tour. But there are always other things better you know. It all depends on your life; are you happy where you are? who are you playing with? is the gig at home in NYC, you know that kind of things.

After that, we haven't seen you for a long time, what have you done all this time?

Joe Vasta jr: I have my own business now, dental lab work. I am a gold man ;-) I do bridge work, only the gold part of it. And I dropped out of the music scene for a while. I started playing again in 1995.

Joe is currently interrupted the conversation here: Listen I have to go now but I will come back later on today ... or "maybe tomorrow" ... like the song goes ;-) I will get back to finish you up, okay?

No problem, it's your precious time and more important things first.

Joe Vasta jr: Thanks buddy. Peace out!

DeVille Memorial Nights reports Nov. 2010

ERIC NEIMEIJER, MINK DeBAND & FRIENDS with BORIS & FREDDY.
Reports, video's and photo's of these memorial concerts at this website!

Gurrie van Brug reports: It were all small venues. Wredenhagen and Halle was sold out. Berlin was a bit disappointing (visitors wise). Hannover was well visited. All in all lots of people first time ever to hear Willy's music. Both bands did a great job!

VERSLAG DOOR JAN VAN OFWEGEN [DUTCH]
De Willy Deville memorial tournee in Duitsland was voor ons een mooie gelegenheid om de stad Berlijn weer eens te bezoeken. Onze laatste keer was in 1998 The Rolling Stones in Die Waldbühne.

Willy 'Mink' DeVille audio sharing statement

Unfortunately we have found that some people still do not understand what bootleg trading is about. In the case of Willy "Mink" DeVille bootlegs we will give the following statement.

JAG-Box is the name of a fanatical clique Willy "Mink" DeVille fans. Fans who convert old concert recordings (cassette tapes) to digital music. If necessary, we let the recordings sound better and we make coverartwork for it. Often these older recordings, that have not previously shared before can be really interesting for true DeVille fans. This is all done voluntary non-profit and with much adoration for the artist(s) Willy DeVille and his bands. Then these audience recording will be shared with fans, again without any profit!

Most of these fans - regardless whether they are 1 month or 35 years fan - are fans of the MUSIC by Willy "Mink" DeVille. We also bought all the commercial official products of Willy, sometimes in multiple pressings because we are real collectors and all great fans. His music is why we love Willy! And we also spent a lot of money on concerts the past 30 years. We also have spent much time and energy in activities for the love to Willy as a human being and his music. You may well say that we have supported Willy in good and in bad times. And this adoration we hope to share a long time! As long as he rest in peace we are Just His Friends!

The designation "JAG-Box" is absolutely not commercial! Just as the addition of 'Dead End'. This is even meant to be an ironically called rejection to "sharks" who are not prepared to share the beautiful music of Willy! How to Download Torrents: WikiHow

translation in Dutch:

Zolang hij rust in vrede zijn we Just His Friends!

Music Review: Mark Newman - Walls Of Jericho

[Review by Richard Marcus]
It's a long walk to the centre stage microphone from either the right or left side of the stage where a band's lead guitarist usually hangs out. Oh sure it might not look like a great distance physically, but to make the trip from being a sideman to fronting a band involves much more than just taking a few steps in one direction or the other. Think of all those times you've been impressed by either a background singer or a lead guitarist in a group and then compare that with how many of them have ever gone on to have a really successful solo career. To be honest the only one who springs instantly to my mind is Ry Cooder. I can't begin to count the number of people who've made me think, "Wow I'd like to hear them do something solo", only to be disappointed by what they produce on their own.

There's a big difference between being a really good musician and being a front person for a band. He or she will be the focus of an audiences' attention no matter where they are standing or what they are doing while on stage. Even when the spotlight temporarily leaves them to focus on another's solo, it always seems like they are only lending the attention to the other and things only return to normal when the spotlight finds them again. Call it charisma, call it a certain je ne sais quois, call it whatever you like, but there just seem to certain people who are made to be in the spotlight and others who are destined to support them.

The first time I saw or heard Mark Newman was on a telecast of a concert given by the late Willy DeVille on his last European tour. Newman wasn't a regular member of DeVille's touring band and in fact had never played with them before. What impressed me the most about watching Newman was seeing how he didn't try to copy the work of the man he was replacing, but had the confidence in his own abilities to bring his own interpretations to the material. It's very difficult to parachute into a band and replace somebody who has played with them for years, but not only did Newman not look out of place, he brought a new flavour to familiar material while remaining true to DeVille's distinctive sound. DeVille must have been happy with him as well, because after his death his widow presented Newman with her husband's dobro.

Aside from playing with DeVille and others over the years, Newman has also been forging his own solo career and his first release, Must Be A Poney, came out in 2006. Not having heard the previous CD I was intrigued enough by what I had seen him do in the telecast to check out his brand new release, Walls Of Jericho, and see if he was as capable a front man as he is a sideman. As ten of the twelve tracks on the disc are his own material it should provide a good indication of his ability to live in the spotlight rather than just sharing it for a few seconds a song.

For anyone who has seen Newman play guitar it should come as no surprise that right from the first track, "Until The Morning Comes", his playing is what grabs your attention. Yet it's not because he's doing any of the typical guitar hero stuff involving playing a million notes at high speed or tearing a hole through the middle of a song with any of the other pyrotechnics that seem to be the stock in trade of lead guitarists. Instead what you'll notice about his playing is its clarity of tone and how he has integrated it into the overall flow of each song. His songs aren't simply excuses for him to unleash blistering guitar solos or to show off in any manner, they are fully crafted pieces of work made up of more than just his own talents on stringed instruments.

I say stringed instruments because Newman is not only a highly skilled guitar player, but also shines on pedal steel, mandolin, and bass and slide guitars. No matter which of these instruments he happens to pick up he plays it with the same clarity of tone and restraint that was so appealing on the opening track. Of course there's more to songs and an album than just someone's ability to play their instrument; there's a couple of things called lyrics and vocals which go a long way towards making or breaking a tune. To be honest, Newman's vocal abilities don't jump out and strike you immediately as there's nothing that marks his voice as instantly distinctive. On the other hand he's not one of those people who initially impress you with some specific vocal quirk but who lose your attention after a song or two when you discover they have nothing else to offer, including sincerity.

What you'll learn about Newman over the course of listening to the recording is that while there doesn't seem to be anything particularly remarkable about his voice, you can't ignore it. Like his guitar playing his vocals aren't about wowing you, but about being in service to the material. Whether he has a particular message he's trying to put across, like "Fire On The Water" and what it has to say about oil spills caused by the recklessness of oil companies, or is being a little more abstract as is the case with the haunting "White Bird", he doesn't have any trouble holding your attention. The only exception for me was the 7th track on the disc, "Vacation" and that was just a matter of personal taste as it wasn't the type of song I like. That's not to say it wasn't as well written and performed as the rest of the disc, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Anyone who has heard Mark Newman play guitar, or any of the other instruments he is so highly proficient with, will be well aware of what a talented sideman he is. After listening to Walls Of Jericho you will see he's equally capable of taking the large step from the side of the stage to the centre. His abilities as a singer, songwriter and interpreter of other people's material, including a cover of his former band leader's, Willy DeVille, "Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl", are such that he can more than hold his own in the bright glare of the spotlight. Even better is how he uses the light in order to serve the material and not his ego, sharing it with others, like his duet with Naomi Margolin on "White Bird", so that the listener is able to get the most out of a song as possible. Mark Newman may not be a name everybody recognizes as a band leader right now, but after listening to this album you can't help but think that will change in the not too distant future.
