Philippe Barbot a été la plume rock et chanson de Télérama pendant 25 ans avant d’écrire pour le magazine Rolling Stone. Il a également signé une des premières biographies d’Alain Bashung (Librio 2000) . Auteur de chansons, il a publié un premier album « Point barre », en 2012, qui sera suivi d’un nouvel opus en 2015.

Famous DeVille pics - Gerard Wessels

Het doen en laten van de spuitbusartiest en musicus Herman Brood staat in dit boek centraal. Er zijn 35 foto's in zwart-wit, formaat variërend tussen dubbelpagina (31 x 48 cm) en 13 x 18 cm. De opnamen zijn gemaakt tussen 1985 en 1990 en tonen Brood tijdens zijn werk als beeldend kunstenaar, tijdens optredens als musicus, straatperformer e.d. en privé. Er zijn veel opnamen van reizen (Moskou, Barcelona, New York) en ook een aantal met dochtertje en vrouw. Hoewel een aantal in de categorie 'maffe streken' valt (b.v. naakt langs de leuning van het Concertgebouw, met broek op de hielen voor een bekladschilderde muur) is het geheel toch wel boeiend. Dit door de veelzijdigheid, doordat een aantal foto's de gevoelige kanten laten zien en door de uitstekende foto- en afdruktechniek. Ook komt in de foto's een tijdsbeeld naar voren van een leven in een bepaalde 'scène'. Bij elke foto is een korte titel en er is een aantal songtekstachtige stukken, beide in het Engels, opgenomen. Glanzend wit omslag geheel gevuld met titel in grote zwarte letter. De foto's van Herman Brood met Willy DeVille zijn door Gerard gemaakt in Barcelona.

Book 'Love and Emotion' by Mauro Zambellini

Italian journalist Mauro Zambellini has written a book about Willy DeVille, Love and Emotion. The book will be available in the Italian library by middle of april.

Quella di Willy DeVille è una storia rock. Anzi, una storia blues. DeVille aveva tutto: aveva la voce, aveva il fascino, aveva le canzoni. Aveva la band, i mitici Mink DeVille. Aveva i produttori, Jack Nitsche, Mark Knopfler, Doc Pomus, Jim Dickinson. Aveva il culto del pubblico italiano e di quello francese, che lo idolatravano. Aveva lo show, l'unico che se la giocasse con la E Street Band di Bruce Springsteen. Aveva l'ammirazione di Ahmet Ertegun patron della Atlantic, la fiducia di etichette del calibro di Polydor, Capitol, FNAC e quella di Carlo Ditta e la sua Orleans Records. Aveva la stoffa di Chuck Berry, dei Drifters e dei Ramones tutti assieme. Eppure non gli riuscì mai di conquistare il pubblico americano, evidentemente più sensibile alle melodie radiofoniche degli Eagles. Ovunque andasse, con chiunque si mettesse, si portava dietro la sua bad luck, la sua maledizione di un vampiro nato per fare rock'n'roll. Se n'è andato prima di invecchiare, strappato non da un'overdose di rock'n'roll ma da una malattia incurabile. Persino dopo morto questo grande artista americano non ha ancora trovato in patria il riconoscimento che si merita; ma noi non lo abbiamo dimenticato e non lo ha dimenticato Mauro Zambellini che a lui ha dedicato questa sentita e passionale biografia. Zambo è da sempre uno dei più dotati giornalisti rock italiani, e quando ama un artista mette il turbo alle sue pagine. Lo ha fatto con i Rolling Stones, la sua band preferita, con Il tempo è dalla nostra parte. Lo fa oggi con la storia di Willy, che recupera dai tempi del suo incontro con Tootsie, la sua musa ispiratrice e la sua maledizione ad un tempo, nei giorni in cui suonava in un gay club a San Francisco, e poi al CBGB's nei glory days del punk newyorchese, inseguendolo per il suo percorso francese, a New Orleans, a Memphis e infine al ritorno a NYC dove si sarebbe spento. Filip Wouters is a contemporary photographer from Belgium. He approaches his characters in a very subtle way. Being specialized in and fascinated by Rock 'n Roll and, more specifically, the artists themselves, he created a unique collection starting from Miles Davis to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And a few nice Willy DeVille pics! Filip shows the viewer the character and the music behind the artist in his own personal black and white technique.

Having worked for several music magazines in the Benelux, Filip was nominated for and was the winner of several awards and prices while he still exhibits regularly in international galleries. Nowadays Filip is chief photographer for the Belgian Music Magazine Stage in which he presents his work in all varieties of artist pictures, musical instruments like the Namm in Los Angeles & the Frankfurter Musikmesse in Germany.

- das ist der Titel des 1.Buches von Dr. Karl Frings, der uns immer wieder interessante Berichte für unsere AgorA liefert und der Ihnen daher nicht zuletzt deswegen sicherlich bekannt ist.

Aufgewachsen und zu Hause in Stopfenreuth, hegt er eine tiefe Verbundenheit zur seiner Heimat, dem Marchfeld. Daher ist dieses auch der Schauplatz für die 13 Geschichten in seinem Erzählband.

Frings schreibt über Dinge, die er selbst gesehen, gehört oder erlebt hat, und entwickelt diese mit viel Fantasie weiter; oft bleibt der Schluss einer Geschichte auch der Fantasie des Lesers überlassen. Meist begegnet man Sonderlingen und Außenseitern und mit ein bisschen Gespür wird mancher „Eingeborene“ vielleicht sogar das echte Vorbild hinter der einen oder anderen Figur erkennen…

Boeken over Willy DeVille [Dutch]

Als je op internet gaat zoeken naar boeken (‘books’) over Willy DeVille kom je niet veel verder dan Facebook, Storybook Love, het lied dat gebruikt werd in de film The Princess Bride(1987), of condoleance boeken die na zijn trieste overlijden op 6 augustus 2009 online zijn gezet.

En natuurlijk het fotoboek Zie je - See Ya Later - Willy DeVille through the eyes of Patricia Steur, de in Nederland zo wereldberoemde fotografe. Dit schitterende portret fotoboek bevat tevens een dvd met een documentaire en interviews met Steur en DeVille gemaakt door Lisette Erdtsieck. In februari 2008 aan de vooravond van zijn Europese tournee werd dit ten doop gehouden in Harderwijk.



Natuurlijk zijn er pop naslagwerken zoals de jaarlijkse Muziekkrant OOR's Pop-encyclopedie en pop fotoboeken waarvan Popfotografie (2009) door Harrie Heuts nog redelijk recent is en prachtige Pinkpop Classic foto's van Willy uit 2007 bevat.

Boeken over waar het allemaal begon de CBGB and OMFUG - Thirty Years from the Home of Underground Rock (2005) door Hilly Kristal, en From CBGB to the Roundhouse (2009) door Tim Burrows. En onlangs kwam de paperback Musical Groups Established in 1974 (2010) uit waarin de band Mink Deville ook voor komt.

Heel veel over de inspiratiebron New Orleans zoals het schitterende fotoboek New Orleans Jazz Fest (2001) door Michael P. Smith. En interessant zijn ook boeken over personen die Willy inspireerde zoals de biografie Lonely Avenue - The Unlikely Life & Times of Doc Pomus (2008) door Alex Halberstadt.



Er bestaan voldoende boeken over Jackie Robinson bijvoorbeeld Stealing Home - The Jackie Robinson Story (2007) door Robert Burleigh. Robinson Sr. was een befaamde honkballer en vader van Jackie Robinson Jr. een jeugdvriend van Billy Borsey (Willy) die op jonge leeftijd in 1971 overleed. Maar dan zoeken we het wel érg ver van huis en ik betwijfel of Willy zelfs in ook maar één van de velen boeken over deze legende (Jackie Sr. dus) voorkomt. Google booksearch maakt het helemaal bont, daar wordt zelfs de cd Victory Mixture als een boek aangeduid en de novel le Coup de Grace van Marguerite Yourcenar direct met Willy DeVille in verband gebracht.



Maar het heugelijke feit doet zich voor dat schrijver Richard Marcus in 2009 heeft aangekondigd de eerste echte officiële biografie over Willy DeVille te zullen gaan schrijven. Deze Canadese publicist voerde eerder interviews met DeVille en is een groot liefhebber van zijn muziek. Andersom was Willy bewonderaar van zijn schrijfsels en de afspraak met Willy's vrouw Nina voor het schrijven van een biografie werd gemaakt. Ook is het Nederlandstalige boek 'Op Het Live Geschreven (de soundtrack van mijn leven)' in de maak, waarin Willy DeVille een belangrijke plaats zal innemen. Een voorpublicatie is als pdf-bestand hier te downloaden [pdf/567 kB/8 pag] Beide boeken zouden ergens in 2011 op de markt moeten komen.

Uiteraard zullen er veel meer lees- en fotoboeken en naslagwerken in relatie tot Willy DeVille bestaan die ik niet ken of over het hoofd gezien heb. Suggesties zijn van harte welkom, dus wees vrij om te reageren!

Just to let people know that I won't be using fan sites on a frequent basis and I apologize in advance if you don't receive an immediate response to any of your queries. I will be predominately using fansites to post announcements concerning the status of the biography. I'm writing of Willy - as in when I've confirmed a publisher, expected publishing date etc.

Currently I've a publisher who has expressed interest in the book and I have provided them with sample chapters and an overview of the book. Hopefully they will respond positively - they commissioned my previous book so are familiar with my abilities which is half the battle when looking for a publisher.

I'm not going to be able to get involved with discussions about Willy or anything I'm writing about for the simple fact that I don't have the time or energy to do so. Willy DeVille ‘See Ya Later - Zie Je’

Willy DeVille bij boekpresentatie in Harderwijk en live in Paradiso feb. 2008

Op donderdagavond 14 februari 2008 was de boekpresentatie van het portret fotoboek van Willy DeVille ‘See Ya Later - Zie Je’ van fotografe Patricia Steur. Het boek bevat tevens een dvd met een documentaire en interviews met Steur en DeVille gemaakt door Lisette Erdtsieck. Bij deze boekpresentatie in Harderwijk waren alle betrokkenen aanwezig en trad de Amerikaanse zanger hoogstpersoonlijk op. Willy werd op gitaar begeleid door Jan Akkerman ("best guitarplayer in the Netherlaaaands") en vocaal ondersteund door Kees Veerman. Het korte optreden was een hilarische mix van humor, chagrijn en muzikale improvisatie. Manuela Kemp presenteerde het geheel. Na afloop was er een signeersessie door Willy DeVille en Patricia Steur. De dag erna - vrijdag 15 februari - was Willy aanmerkelijk frisser tijdens het concert in het Amsterdamse Paradiso. Nadat gitaris Mark Newman het publiek in ’s lands mooiste poptempel had opgewarmd met Americana rootsrock songs van zijn laatste album ‘Must Be A Pony’ opende de Willy DeVille band zoals gebruikelijk instrumentaal de show. De vocale opening was So So Real van het nieuwste album ‘Pistola’. Hiervan werden slechts 3 songs gespeeld, voor de rest werd het een soort van greatest hits show waarin o.a. Spanish Stroll, Hey Joe, Demasiado Corazon, Italian Shoes, Cadilac Walk, Savoir Faire, Bacon Fat en Chieva de revue passeerden. Een retestrakke uitvoering van Venus of Avenue D vormde één van de hoogtepunten. De uptempo songs werden weer afgewisseld met nummers gevuld met veel romantische overtuiging en hunkering zoals Heart And Soul en de toegift Let It Be Me. Met een sprankelende mix van blues, rock ‘n roll, doowop, soul, cajun, country en latin liet Willy horen dat het muzikale vuur nog lang niet gedoofd is. [Gvdh] Foto's Ton Pors
