Steve Conte's long-overdue new album INTERNATIONAL COVER-UP

INTERNATIONAL COVER-UP
Steve Conte's Long-Overdue New Album - Now  On iTunes!

Get 1 Song Or All 8 Songs From Steve's New COVERS Album On iTunes

***NOTE*** Physical CDs are only available on CDbaby.com, Amazon.com and at live shows. The digital album is available on CDbaby, iTunes and all major online retailers.  Individual tracks can only be purchased on iTunes.

It's here - Steve's new album,   INTERNATIONAL COVER-UP !
The album features songs written and/or recorded by Eddie Cochran, Willy/Mink DeVille, Tom Waits/Ramones, John Lennon, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Jason And The Scorchers - all delivered in pure Conte-style.

As a 13 year old live performer, Steve Conte looked to The Rolling Stones, The J. Geils Band, Black Oak Arkansas, The Beatles & Jimi Hendrix for both musical inspiration and how to give "good show". Cut to 2016 - Conte releases his "COVERS" album featuring many of the songs he & his band have played on tour - and captures that LIVE spirit in the recordings!

In addition to playing original songs from his studio albums on tour, Steve would always add a few well-chosen covers. Conte says: “This album contains some of my favorite songs to play live; road-tested in Europe with my band, The Crazy Truth International. I kept the album production sparse to showcase the band's live energy. All songs were recorded live, in a few takes. Most guitar solos were played live, a few tracks have a guitar overdub, one has horns, there's one with organ, and another with piano. There’s even a “one-take” vocal performance on there.”

INTERNATIONAL COVER-UP  was largely recorded at Labtones Studio in Dordrecht, The Netherlands by Wilco Minderhoud & Jasper van Dorp. It features 6 studio recordings with Conte’s European version of The Crazy Truth - plus a pair of solo acoustic tracks recorded in New York City; one in his own Manhattan studio, The Joint NYC and the other recorded live on renowned record producer, Steve Lillywhite’s program for East Village Radio, The Lillywhite Sessions.

The band tracks, with Conte on guitars/vocals, Jeroen Polderman on drums and Jozz Verheijen on bass were previously only available as an “exclusive” during Conte’s 2013 Pledge Music campaign for his release, The Steve Conte NYC Album. The tracks have since been re-mastered and the running order re-sequenced to accommodate the acoustic songs. This is the first time that the tracks are available on CD - and only 500 copies were pressed!

Titus Wolfe - Ho-Ho-Kus N.J. (2015)

Louie X Erlanger about Willy DeVille [collected]

"By the time we set out to do “Le Chat Bleu”, Manfred, Ruben and Bobby were gone and Willy wanted to change managers. This resulted in a lawsuit where our equipment was locked up and we couldn’t tour. Capitol became worried about recouping their investment. So Willy, oblivious to money as he always was, decided it was time to make his dream recording in Paris, with Jean Claude Petit doing string arrangements. I thought he was crazy. I’d seen him jettison two friends who in Mink’s early years had eaten Hamburger Helper every day for a year to support his vision, and I suspected we were on the verge of being dropped by our label. So I was pretty disgusted with everything. Willy’s response? On the plane to Paris he said to me “Don’t worry, I have an angel on my shoulder.” Then he proceeded to tell me that one of the funniest things I ever said to him was “Willy you’re one of the most difficult people I’ve ever dealt with” and he started to laugh. Willy had a puzzling take on reality, but for some reason I’m laughing thinking about it. At the time, though, I was feeling ready to move on.

Working with Elvis Presley’s rhythm section of Ron Tutt and Jerry Scheff on Le Chat Bleu in Paris was a pleasure. They had a great feel and could play anything. I think it’s a great record, but Capitol in the U.S. didn’t understand it. “Mazurka”, a zydeco accordion tune lifted from a Queen Ida LP that I had loaned Willy to force him to return my Wild Tchoupitoulas cassette, was the track that drove them crazy. Kenny Margolis played great accordion on it, but rock ‘n’ roll records didn’t have accordion in those days; polka records did. Consequently, the label wouldn’t release the album. Willy was beside himself, but he was a very persistent guy and he convinced Capitol France to release it. It ended up doing well, so Capitol U.S. capitulated and released it. Even so, they replaced Mazurka with “Turn You Every Way But Loose”. Notes about the recording: Doc Pomus wrote a few tunes with Willy. I met Doc while hanging out and jamming at the same blues clubs where Doc hung out. I kept telling him about Willy and of course when Doc finally saw him perform he became a fan, telling Willy he’d like to work with him. Before he co-wrote songs for “Le Chat Bleu” Doc had written the liner notes to Return To Magenta. My favorite of the Doc/Willy tunes is “Just To Walk That Little Girl Home.” It’s the essence of both of them. There’s a great unreleased outtake from the Le Chat Bleu sessions: a beautiful version of Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “Motorhead Baby.” It’s one of the few blues that Willy sang in his own natural voice rather than in his John Hammond growl, and it’s great."

Willy DeVille Collected - Mpodia review (NL)

Willy DeVille - Collected (3cd)
maart, 2015
door Roelof Noorda - Mpodia.nl
Willy DeVille – Collected (3cd)
Label: Universal
Eindoordeel: 8,5

Billy de Sade and the Marquis traden voornamelijk in louche bars.

“This Could Be The Night” werd een hit waar DeVille naar snakte. “Where Angels Fear To Tread” kent de hit “Demasiado Corazon” . Is A Beat Of My Heart”.

Willy DeVille Collected 3CD release feb 2015

Just To Walk That Little Girl Home schrijven.
Just To Walk That Little Girl Home
"Willy had the chorus, but no verses to the song that would become “Just To Walk That Little Girl Home.” Willy brought his acoustic Gibson. Doc sat next to Willy, separated by a small table and I sat facing them behind Doc’s Wurlitzer electric piano. It was fascinating to watch Willy and the master lyricist work."
"Doc loved Willy’s chorus lyric and melody which had a Latin sway that reminded Doc of a Ben E. King type song. Doc said it was important to tell a story, so he suggested the singer should be in a place where he sees a girl who has the singer immediately love struck. Doc suggested that place can be a cafe. Willy liked this idea. “How about Roberto’s Café?” Willy wasn’t impressed with this suggestion. “Naahh. Not such a specific name.” Doc thought for a few minutes and wrote in his notebook. “Willy, I got it,” Doc announced excitedly, and he recited what would become the first lyric of the song. “Its closing time in this nowhere café.”
"Willy loved Doc’s words and the mood evoked by the lyrics. Doc then went on to describe the situation in which the girl was with a guy who seemed to know her “more than just casually.” Willy’s chorus lyric, “but there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do,” then emphatically “No there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do. No there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do just to walk that little girl home. Just to walk that…mmm just to walk that little girl home,” had a pleading urgency. Doc then went on to describe the girl from the singer’s view in more detail. “Her flashing smile. Her searching eyes are a promise it seems of having all of my dreams finally realized.” [source: Universal Music Legends]

Live At CBGB’s with ‘Mink DeVille’ [TLT blog]

Source: The Lost Turntable - Thursday, September 13th, 2012

If I told you I had a compilation album from 1976 called Live At CBGB’s, what would you guess would be on it? Blondie? Talking Heads? The Ramones? Dead Boys? Televsion? Nope. Try Tuff Darfs, Manster, The Miamis and Sun, to name a few.

Why are there no big-name acts on this LP? Well by 1976 the majority of those bands, including almost all of the ones I mentioned, were either already signed to major labels or in the process of being signed to the majors, leaving only the lesser-known (but still good…for the most part) bands left behind and available for a compilation like this.

Even though nearly all of the acts on this group vanished into thin air, that doesn’t mean they’re totally without merit. In fact, I’m glad this compilation focuses on the lesser-known and more obscure acts of the CBGB’s club scene. I think it helps to paint a much more accurate picture of the groups that were playing there during that era. It wasn’t all punk, new wave and art-rock. As this compilation shows, there were a ton of power pop, blues-influenced guitar rockers, and even one straight-up metal act playing to enthusiastic audiences at the “punk” club. Discovering these lesser-known obscurities makes me love the now-lost venue even more. I hope you feel the same way after giving these tracks a listen.

Tuff Darts
All For The Love of Rock ‘n Roll
Head Over Heels
Slash
The Tuff Darts did manage to release one album in 1978, although by then they had lost their original lead singer, Robert Gordon, in lieu of replacement vocalist Tommy Frenzy. I think this is the only recording of the group ever released that features Gordon. The band isn’t very punk, isntead they have a slight glam element to their sound. I could totally see Bowie of the era adding some flourish to a track like “All For The Love Of Rock ‘n Roll.” The most punk track of the bunch is “Slash,” a dark, macabre number about preferring suicide over going on a second date with a girl from hell. Speed this track up half a beat and you’d totally have a Ramones number. Tuff Darts are just one of many bands on this album who are still around in some form or another, check out their official site here.

The Laughing Dogs
I Need A Million
It Feels Alright Tonight
The Laughing Dogs are a power pop band, which of course means that they never found any modicum of mainstream success. I can’t even imagine that they found much of a following in the CBGB’s scene, they’re way too poppy and “fun” when compared to a lot of the other bands of the era. The group released two albums in the late 70s/early 80s, and although they never took off they’re apparently still around and performing live, and good for them.

Manster
Over, Under, Sideways, Down
I’m Really Not This Way
I don’t know if you could ever really call a cover of a 60s blues-jam “post-punk” but these guys sure straddle the line with their version of The Yardbirds’ “Over, Under, Sideways, Down,” thanks largely to the batshit manic vocals of lead singer Warren Stahurski. “I’m Really Not This Way,” a heartbreaking song about being homeless, is even an even weirder tune. It sounds like a lounge act tune from hell. What the hell happened to these guys? It sounds like they were a bit nuts. Love it.

The Miamis
We Deliver
Another power pop act. This song is so damn cute I want to hug it. You can find out more about the group, and buy their only record, at their official website.

Mink DeVille
Cadillac Moon [MP3]
Change It Comes [MP3]
Mink DeVille started out as a band, but as they progressed into the 80s they pretty much became a vehicle for lead singer/guitarist Willy DeVille, who became somewhat of a successful musician in the 80s and up until his death in 2009(!). Mink DeVille remain a cult band to this day, and I know more than one record nerd who swear by them. I’ve never really gotten into the group, too much of a soul sound for me. They sure as hell don’t fit in on this record. That’s not to say they’re bad, they just stick out like, well, a blues/soul band on a punk/rock compilation.

The Shirts
Operetico
Poe
A.V.M.
One of the most interesting acts on this album, The Shirts have a sound that’s part new wave, part power pop and part 70s rock ‘n roll. And there were apparently like nine people in this group at one point, so I guess there were plenty of genres to go around. “Opertico” is a good tune with an amazing riff, “Poe” is a punky little rocker that fits in with the kind of music one would expect to hear at CBGB’s at the time, while “A.V.M.” is a six-minute banger that definitely has its roots in traditional 70s rock music. All are good tunes.

Another group that hasn’t gone away, The Shirts are still kicking it after 30 some years. You can check out their site here.

Stuart’s Hammer
Everybody’s Depraved
Stuart’s Hammer never got a record deal but they sure seemed to be a mainstay at CBGB’s back in the day. At their official website you can find a few posters advertising their gigs from back in the day, as well as some other cool nuggets from the era. Based on this tune I really wouldn’t call them punk, but they’re good.

Sun
Romance
This is one of the cases where the story/members of the band is far more interesting than the song itself (although I do dig the song).

First of all, if this song is any indication, Sun was a straight-up metal band. No pretense of punk or art-rock here. These dudes loved themselves some crazy guitar solos and howling banshee vocals. They sound like a band out of time and place on this record. They belong in 1983 LA, not 1976 NYC.

From what I could dig up, Sun went through a number of line-up/name changes during its short run. The guitarist in this line-up was a man by the name of Niki Buzz, who some may know for his work with the 80s rock groups M-80 and Vendetta. A more notable contributor to the band, however, would be their bass player Bill Laswell. While that name may not ring a bell for some of you, Laswell is one of the most influential and experimental bass players and producers of the past 30 or so years. He played a key role in Herbie Hancock’s electronic phase of the early-80s, and he formed the experimental rock outfit Praxis in the 90s, a supergroup that had a revolving door line-up that included Mike Patton, Iggy Pop and Buckethead.

I don’t know how long Laswell stuck around in Sun, but at some point the group lost him and Buzz and then changed their name to Son. Then, I assume after more line-up changes, they became Getaway and released a pair of albums in the early 80s for A&M records, one of which included a slightly different version of “Romance” under the name “Getaway.” Someone from the band is on YouTube today, and he has more than a few videos featuring the band in its various incarnations. Check out his channel if you’re interested in learning more about the group.

Willy DeVille - Live In Paris And New York [Ace Records]

With his mariachi-flavoured take on ‘Hey! Joe’ high in European charts across late 1992 and early 1993 and his “Backstreets Of Desire” album (now available on Ace) over 300,000 copies, Willy DeVille found himself, after many years of struggle, a genuine star across the Continent. Success brought larger audiences and more extensive tours, something DeVille had long strived for. A tall, striking-looking man who dressed like a 19th Century riverboat gambler with a pencil moustache, long, swept back black hair and extravagantly tailored suits, shirts, shoes and ties, Deville commanded the stage, singing with a rare candour and expressiveness. As he was now playing to new audiences who were largely unaware of his Mink DeVille recordings, his French label FNAC decided to service the new fans with a live hits album.

Philippe Rault, the French producer who had overseen “Backstreets” (and produced ‘Hey! Joe’), took control. He decided on the Bottom Line in New York, so to pay tribute to the city in which DeVille had honed his craft, and the Olympia in Paris, the city that made him a star. With the success of DeVille’s New Orleans recordings (see Ace’s “Willy DeVille In New Orleans” CD), Eddie Bo and three of the Wild Magnolias (Chief “Bo” Dollis, Chief “Monk” Boudreaux and Norwood “Gitchie” Johnson) were invited to join proceedings.

The songs performed range across DeVille’s recording career with only ‘Hey! Joe’ and ‘Bamboo Road’ being from “Backstreets”. His interpretations of ‘Spanish Stroll’ and ‘Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl’ match (and possibly even better) those cut with Jack Nitzsche on Mink DeVille’s debut album “Cabretta”. Freddy Koella, the gifted French guitarist who joined DeVille in New Orleans in 1990 and would stay with him until 2002 (upon which he joined Bob Dylan’s band), led a large ensemble with the Valentines providing backing vocals and the Brass Attack Horns adding a suitably greasy top.

“Live” – subtitled “Greatest Hits ’76-’93” – was released on CD and double vinyl late-1993 to strong sales, especially in France, Spain (where ‘Demasiado Corazon’ was a hit and “Live” topped the album chart), Switzerland, Germany and Holland. In France “Live” received the prestigious Prix de l’Académie Charles-Cros. “Live” was not released in any Anglo-territories – this reissue on Big Beat rescues the album from oblivion (FNAC collapsed in 1994) and finally makes it available to DeVille fans in the English-speaking world. DeVille dedicated “Live” to Steve Douglas, the majestic saxophonist who played on and produced Mink DeVille’s “Return To Magenta” and “Le Chat Bleu” and died in 1993.

Ace’s reissue of “Live” comes with extensive notes featuring interviews with all the surviving principals involved, illustrated with previously unseen photos and memorabilia. The album presents an artist at the height of his powers. Any fan of late-20th Century American music will find much to enjoy here [By Garth Cartwright].

Willy DeVille - Unplugged in Berlin 2002 [2011 release]

(Audiophile 2 LP – 180g Vinyl)

Unplugged in Berlin is the name of an acoustic trio performance by Willy DeVille.
For years it’s been available in bootleg quality only, but now the Cologne label MEYER RECORDS is rereleasing the recording professionally. Mr. Heart & Soul has seldom sounded so poised and soulful – a master at his very best. The lineup of instruments nearly defines the performance’s subsequent character. Grand piano, upright bass, dobro, acoustic and electric guitars provide an intimate setting and frame Willy DeVille’s unforgettable voice just right. Willy needs nothing else. Another good thing about this recording is that it gives this deep and highly emotional musician plenty of space to tell his stories. Willy has always been a good story-teller, but during this concert, performed in Berlin, he was unusually chatty. Almost every song has its own anecdote. The record producers were smart enough to leave room for these, and this lends the recording a unique quality. Unplugged in Berlin shows us ‘Another side of Willy DeVille’ and the right way to preserve an absolutely gorgeous performance.
