MINK DEVILLE
Live at Rockpalast (1978 & 1981)

ROCKPALAST is a legendary ‘live’ music TV show hosted in Germany by the WDR channel. It first broadcast in 1974 and has become a pan-European television institution. It has its own fan club and online forum, and in almost four decades, it has become a trademark of quality viewing and listening.

Discovered at the legendary CBGB’s club in New York, Mink DeVille was always most popular in Europe.
Fronted by the charismatic singer, guitarist and songwriter Willy DeVille, US new wave band Mink DeVille are best known for their 1977 UK Top 20 smash hit ‘Spanish Stroll’.

This release combines Rockpalast shows in Cologne (1978) and Essen (1981), played by two completely different line-ups. The first showcases material from acclaimed album ‘Return To Magenta’; the second show features material from ‘Coup De Grace’, their fourth album, which was produced by Neil Young associate Jack Nitzsche.

Willy DeVille – who interrupted his US tour for a week to play 1981’s important European televised concert – had been struck down by flu at rehearsal, but he fought this and an indifferent audience (in a long 4-act bill, headlined by Roger Chapman & The Shortlist) to deliver a memorable performance.

Boz Scaggs recently paid tribute to DeVille, who died of cancer in 2009, with re-workings of ‘Mixed Up Shook Up Girl’ and ‘Cadillac Walk’ (both performed by Mink DeVille here on the 1978 show). Expertly restored and remastered. Superb vision, outstanding sound. The best in the business!

Willy DeVille - Alive in Holland 1996

Willy DeVille - Alive in Holland, is al Dutch TV documentary with a Willy DeVille interview and live footage of the Vredenburg concert in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Feb. 22nd 1996. It was broad casted in the VPRO program Lola de Musica, later that year. It's a great document containing a nice interview with a relaxed Willy (with his then-wife/manager, the late Lisa Leggett) and songs like 'Lilly's Daddy's Cadillac', 'Running Through The Jungle', 'Savoir Fair', 'No Such Pain as Love', 'Steady Drivin' Man' and 'Walking the Dixie'.

As an online reporter and weblog editor of this Willy DeVille International Fans blog, I was asked in June 2014 by Dutch National Radio 6 for the item  'The Concert, The Story' by Mijke en Co Live! (NTR).  Of course it had to be a concert I had visited and the broadcast company NTR had to have soundboard recordings of it in their archives (legal stuff). With the radio editor I decided to choose two tracks (see the videos) from this Dutch TV documentary 'Willy DeVille - Live in Holland'. I chose the ballad "No Such Pain as Love", written by Willy DeVille, a rare country music tune offering by him. And the up-tempo song "Steady Drivin' Man" (Written-By – Willy DeVille), that became a favorite of many Willy DeVille fans; DeVille performed the song also on his Acoustic Trio Live in Berlin 25 years (!) after the original recording. So he was very proud of these songs, and many fans appreciate – with many others – these songs.

August 7th (5 years and 1 day after Willy died) we were ready and set to go! But... it was called off shortly before the live radio show started. 'The heirs' objected to play these songs on National Radio! I didn't (and still don't!) understand it?! Willy's music is not often heard on the national radio, and if there is a chance, heirs/management (or whatever they call themselves) do not allow it. And that's a shame because Willy's music deserves to be heard by many listeners. For ever and ever, heart and soul!

A German DeVille fan wanted to know who the percussion player was on Mink DeVille's 'Stand By Me' and 'Slow Drain' (From "Live at Montreux 1982"). Mink DeVille guitarist at that time, Paul James himself, gave us the answer: "it was Paolo Caruso. He also introduced Willy, off stage, on mike thru the PA, at the beginning and at the end of the show for the encore. He was the drum tech and played conga drums on a couple songs. he played on 'Slow Drain' also". - Cheers! Paul.

Paolo Caruso, not to be confused with with Paul Caruso (1956-2006) who played with Jimi Hendrix, began self-taught with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion rhythms and instruments. He later took specialized courses from the New York Drummers Collective, studying with Frankie Malabe (Peter Erkine group) and Cyro Baptista (David Byrne, Paul Simon). He has participated in various tours in Italy and abroad with the band of singer-songwriter Luca Carboni. He participated in "Festival del Ritmo e delle Percussioni", playing with drummers Daniele Tedeschi (Vasco Rossi) and Walter Calloni (Lucio Battisti, PFM). He has played and worked with singer Willy DeVille, English group Urban Cookies Collective, Frontera, Funky Company, Sambahia, Mario Lavezzi, Stadio, Daniele Fossati, Gang, Alberto Solfrini, Nomadi, Paolo Rossi, Tosca, Vinicio Capossela, Vinx, Airto Moreira, Bob Moses. Willy DeVille 'the actor' - a filmography

Except that the music of Willy "Mink" DeVille appears in dozens of soundtracks Willy himself also played a few times in a movie. Yes Willy DeVille was an actor, usually as himself in musical documentary's, concertfilms and TV shows (Saturday Night Live) but also a few times as an (supporting) actor in films. Which twice with New Yorker Mickey Rourke, the two liked each other. These were always tough gangster films and thrillers in which both played rebellious antihero characters. A brief overview:

DeVille Memorial CD & DVD verkrijgbaar!

Een concert registratie op cd tijdens de laatste Willy DeVille fanclub ontmoeting op 27 Februari 2010…

Alle optredens zijn via de soundboard vastgelegd en er is besloten om van het tribute optreden door Erik Neijmeijer en Friends een officiële cd uit te brengen. Deze cd is slechts éénmalig te bestellen! Een waardig aandenken waarop naast Erik Neimeijer, Sebastiaan van Olst, Gert Jan van der Weerd, Bauke Bakker ook FREDDY KOELLA en BORIS KINBERG meespelen. En hoe!

De fanclub stopt en dat is echt zo, vandaar dat er slechts een eenmalige mogelijkheid komt om deze cd te bestellen. Alle bestellingen die binnen komen vóór 25 maart 2010 worden ook spoedig uitgeleverd. De cd is daarna niet meer te verkrijgen. De fanclub neemt geen voorraad. Mis deze buitenkans niet want er komt verder geen aankondiging meer! Alleen te bestellen via de mail en de postbus. Je kan uiteraard wel vrienden en kennissen inlichten want je mag er zoveel bestellen als je wilt. Tot de datum van vervaardiging kunnen wij de aantallen nog aanpassen. Als de kosten van het maken van de cd eruit zijn, wordt de rest van de opbrengsten verdeeld onder de bandleden en onder Boris en Freddy. Er blijft dus geen cent bij de fanclub zelf hangen!


De hoesjes zijn een ontwerp van G-design. Zowel de productie, de opnamen, de fotografie en het art-design kwamen belangeloos tot stand dankzij enthousiaste die-hard Willy DeVille fans! En met toestemming van het DeVille management en alle betrokkenen.

Als je er niet bij geweest bent wat kun je dan verwachten? Een Freddy Koella die helemaal los gaat bij o.a. ‘Goin Over The Hill’, een super versie van ‘Hey Joe’ en overgevoelige uitvoeringen van ‘Accross The Border Line’ en ‘Heaven Stood Still’. Ook de andere songs hebben de sfeer en de feel van die gedenkwaardige avond in Hellendoorn.

DVD - Mink DeVille - Live At Montreux 1982

Seeing as this Live At Montreux 1982 DVD is of a concert from 26 years ago, I watched the Mink DeVille Band, recalling how things were in 1982 and exactly what was being played on the radio (and MTV). I only mention this so as to put this very tight six-piece group in place with their ‘hair band’ counterparts of the day. Mink DeVille with their enigmatic lead singer, Willy DeVille, is certainly not like any band that was around at the time….nor are they every much like many others who have come and gone since.

Again we get the amazing camera work of a Montreux production team with on-stage close-ups so we can see every bead of sweat on skinny pompadoured Willy Deville’s face as he sings and sways for the crowd. The rest of the band consists of Louis Cortelezzi on sax, Kenny Margolis on keys, Paul James on lead guitar, Joey Vasta on bass and Tommy Price on drums — all pumping along through a myriad of musical styles. Songs run from the ‘noir’ feel of set opener “Harlem Nocturne” (written in 1939, no less!) right on through the groove of the third number, “Savior Faire,” and the triple shot of this 16-song set, “Love Me Like You Did Before,” “Spanish Stroll” and “Lipstick Traces.”

As with other DVDs from Montreux, there is a fold-out providing a background for each song played, maybe a bit gushing in its praise of DeVille, but informative nonetheless. What I liked most about this concert (beyond the deck-of-a-ship stage set) was how effortlessly Mink DeVille performs, how easily they can switch from all-out rockers to ballads, and then end with a song like “Stand By Me,” I’m not sure about the current state of live bands (I really don’t get out all that much these days) but I can tell you Mink DeVille is about as tight as a band can get. And this DVD is a great historical document to what they were all about.

“Low Rider” is a song written by the band War and appearing on their album Why Can’t We Be Friends?, released in 1975. It reached number one on the US Billboard R&B charts and peaked at number 7 on the Pop Singles chart. According to the All Music Guide review of the song, “the lyric takes the cool image of the low rider — the Chicano culture practice of hydraulically hot-rodding classic cars — and using innuendo, extends the image to a lifestyle”. The song’s most distinguishable feature is its driving bass line, which is present for nearly all of the song. It also ends with a siren-like noise that then becomes a saxophone solo.
